How We Certify

You Can Trust Our Three-Step Certification Process

Step 1 — Assessment of Invasive Risk

We use a scientific tool to research risk factors and determine an assessment score.

Step 2 — Categorisation of Risk

We categorise invasion risk as low, medium or high based on the score.

Step 3 — Technical Review Process

Before plants are promoted to the public all results are reviewed and only verified plants can be promoted with the Certified Gardening Responsibly eco-label.

How Do We Know Our Eco-Labelled Plants Are Better for the Environment?

Each plant is individually researched to find information about its history, its biology and its ecological impact. To categorise a plant as having a higher invasive risk, the plant needs to show evidence of multiple factors of invasiveness.

We are currently trialling our Research Portal, categorisation and technical review process.

With over 30,000 ornamental garden plants available from Australian nurseries, it will take time to grow our assessment library. We are committed to growing the movement over time, adding new plants and varieties as needed, and keeping up to date with new scientific evidence.
