Handroanthus chrysotrichus (Golden Trumpet Tree)

(Tabebuia chrysotricha)

Handroanthus chrysotrichus, Golden Trumpet Tree, is a deciduous tree to 15m native to Brazil. It is not known how long Golden Trumpet Tree has been in the plant trade for but it has naturalised in Northern NSW in that time. It is also considered an emerging environmental weed in southern QLD. The tree has naturalised overseas, particularly in South Africa however it is not invasive anywhere globally. Parts of eastern NSW, QLD and NT have a similar climate to Handroanthus chrysotrichus‘ native range. After the leaves of the Golden Trumpet Tree fall they are replaced by bright yellow blossoms, giving the tree a ‘golden’ look. These are followed by the seed, which persist through winter. The tree produces large numbers of papery seeds which are dispersed via wind and germinate readily.
