Gelsemium sempervirens (Carolina Jasmine, False Jasmine)

(Gelsemium lucidum, Gelsemium nitidum)

Gelsemium sempervirens (Carolina Jasmine) is a twining evergreen climber native to Southern American and Mexico. The plant has been in ornamental trade for more than 50 years and in that time has naturalised in Australia. It is said to be a garden escape in NSW though exact locations are unknown. It also said to be a weed globally but no information could be found on where it is a weed. If left unattended the plant can spread indefinitely and form thick, bushy growth. All parts of the plant are toxic and should not be ingested by animals or humans. Carolina Jasmie has deep green leaves and produces yellow trumpet-like flowers.
