Ctenanthe setosa (Never Never Plant, Prayer Plant)

Ctenanthe setosa is a clump-forming perennial native to South America. It is unclear how long it has been in ornamental trade however it has not naturalised in Australia. Ctenanthe setosa is not known to be invasive anywhere globally. The plant is an environmental weed in Australia and there is anecdotal suggestions it can be aggressive in landscape settings and form monocultures. Ctenanthe setosa reproduces vegetatively which may be spread by dumped garden waste, and possibly water. Seed set is considered rare, or absent, in cultivation which reduces the risk of accidental spread. Ctenanthe setosa plants have striking foliage with variegated green tops and deep purple undersides. Although it can be grown as a garden plant it is more commonly grown as an indoor feature.
