Betula nigra (River Birch, Red Birch)

Betula nigra (Red Birch, River Birch) is a deciduous tree from eastern North America. It is popular for its butter-yellow autumn foliage, and its papery bark. River Birch is an early colonising species that grows near water and tolerates flooding and wet soils. Time in trade in Australia is unknown. It has possibly naturalised in WA, but evidence is lacking. It is not recorded as invasive anywhere else. Its close relative, Betula pendula, is considered invasive in NZ and the USA. Betula nigra reproduces by seed which is carried by wind and water.
