Aglaia odorata (Chinese Rice Flower, Mock Lemon)

Aglaia odorata is a tropical tree up to 10m. Native from China to peninsula Malaysia. It is not known how long it has been in the ornamental plant trade for but it does not appear to have naturalised in Australia in that time. There are small occurrences of possible naturalisation in New Zealand, South America and Africa. There is no information to suggest the species is invasive anywhere globally. The species native range has a similar climate to Australia’s tropical rainforests. Aglaia odorata produces fruit, which each contain one or two seeds, and can produce fruit year round. The fruit contain seeds surrounded by edible flesh. seed dispersal is by primates, mammals and birds. Several sub species exhibit cytotoxic activity against a range of human cancers. Aglaia odorata is covered in blooms year round and flowers have a sweet fragrance.
