Xanthorrhoea macronema (Coastal Grasstree, Bottlebrush Grasstree)

(Xanthorrhaea macronema, Xanthorrhoea minor var. macronema)

This small species of trunkless grass tree usually only grows to 0.8m tall, with the flower spike reaching about 1.5 m tall. It is native to eastern Australia in QLD, and NSW growing in sclerophyll forest on coastal sands and ranges. While it is unknown how long it has been in the ornamental trade in Australia, it is not known to have become naturalised nor invasive anywhere in the world. Its common name the Bottlebrush Grasstree comes from its creamy-yellow flowers resembling a bottlebrush flower.
