Xanthorrhoea australis (Austral Grass-tree, Kangaroo Tails)

This grass tree species is native to South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. It has been in the ornamental trade since 1864 and has not become naturalised outside its native range. It is not recorded as invasive anywhere in the world. This plant has a slow growth rate but can achieve a height of 3 meters. It takes several years for the plant to start flowering. The plant flowers prolifically after fire, and rarely in its absence from July to December. The flowers are followed by fruits containing a few hard, black seeds. This species is adapted to survive fires, and the reason why the trunk is usually black in the wild.
