Toona ciliata (Red Cedar, Santhana Vembu)

(Toona australis)

This deciduous tree is native to tropical Asia, southern China, the Himalayas and Australia. It has been in the Australian plant trade since 1870. It is a declared noxious species in Lord Howe Island (NSW) with no other evidence of invasive behaviour in the country. Red Cedar is invasive overseas in South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania and the United States of America. Red Cedar has the potential to suppress the regeneration of native species. It produces winged small seeds that are spread by wind. Red Cedar has highly sought after red timber. It needs a large space to grow as it can grow 40 – 60 m tall.
