Themeda triandra (Kangaroo Grass; Red Grass, Red Oat Grass; Rooigrass)

(Themeda australis)

This perennial tussock-forming grass has a large native range, expanding from Africa up to Asia and down to all states and territories in Australia. It is unknown how long it has been in the ornamental trade, but it has not become naturalised outside its native range. However, it is regarded as invasive in New Zealand. A related exotic species, Themeda quadrivalvis is a listed invasive species in the NT and WA. Kangaroo Grass can grow up to 1.5m and flowers and fructifies from June to December. The plant has traditional uses as food and medicine in Africa and Australia.
