Syzygium smithii (Lilly Pilly)

(Acmena smithii, Acmena smithii var. minor)

The species is a shrub or tree native to QLD, NSW and VIC that has been in the Australian plant trade since 1850. It has naturalised and become an environmental weed in Victoria outside its native range, where is seen as a potential threat to one or more vegetation formations although not regarded as a significant weed yet. The species is also invasive in Lord Howe Island (NSW). It is an environmental and noxious weed in New Zealand. Lilly Pilly is a long-lived species with copious production of seeds that are dispersed by birds. Seedlings are shade-tolerant and form dense stands that crowd out other species. Acmena smithii var. minor is a naturally occurring form of Acmena smithii, which is a synonym of Syzygium smithii.
