Lower Risk
Kunzea pomifera (Muntries, Emu Apples)
This endemic shrub is native to South Australia and Victoria. The species has been in the ornamental trade for more than 50 years (since 1964) and has not become naturalised outside its native range. There is no evidence of the species being invasive anywhere in the world. The species grows naturally in sandy soils. This plant is a low-growing or prostrate shrub, a groundcover species with small leaves, groups of white flowers and fleshy deep red to purple (or black when mature) edible fruit. The fruits are known as muntries. Muntries are crunchy, have the flavour of a spicy apple and contain up to four times more antioxidants than blueberries. They also provide natural waxes that are good for skin nourishment.
