Doryanthes excelsa (Gymea Lily, Illawarra Lily)

(Furcraea australis)

This large plant is native to Australia, along the coast of the Sydney region. This is a culturally important species that has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia since 1845 and is recommended by the Sydney Weed Committees as a substitute for weedy ground covers. The base of the plant is composed of sword shaped leaves which can grow to 1-2.5 m high, while the flower stalk can grow up to 6 m high. Gymea Lily is an iconic species with striking red flowers on a terminal stem that soars above the leaves.
