Cycas media (Zamia Palm, Queensland Cycad)

(Cycas gracilis)

Cycas media is a native cycad, a palm-like cone-bearing plant endemic to Queensland. It has been in the ornamental trade since 1865 and has not become naturalised outside its native range in Australia, nor considered invasive anywhere in the world. Cycads are gymnosperms which have a very slow growth habit and that reproduce via seeds. All plant parts of this species are considered highly toxic. However, the seeds were eaten by Aboriginal Australians after a long process aimed at removing the toxins.
