Banksia integrifolia (Coast Banksia)

This evergreen tree, up to 25m in height, is native to the east coast of Australia. It grows in a broad range of habitats, from coastal dunes to mountains. Banksia integrifolia is naturalised outside its native range in Australia in WA and Norfolk Island, and overseas in USA and South Africa. The species is recorded as invasive (environmental weed) in New Zealand where populations displace native species. Banksia integrifolia is tolerant of a wide range of habitats and conditions, including drought and frost, preferring sunny, dry areas with poor soils. The species has distinctive leathery green leaves with a silver-white underside. Large yellow flowers are produced from autumn through winter. The nectar attracts local wildlife. Iconic seed pods follow and are spread locally by seed fall and wind dispersal up to 300m from parent trees.
