Adiantum aethiopicum (Common Maidenhair; Maidenhair Fern)

(Adiantum assimile, Adiantum trigonum, Adiantum aethiopicum f. assimile)

This fern is native to most of Australia (except for the Northern Territory), as well as tropical and south Africa, Madagascar and New Caledonia. It grows fast to 0.5 meters tall and it has characteristic black stems. It has possibly naturalised in Victoria outside its native range. There is no evidence of this species being invasive anywhere in the world. This fern spreads vegetatively via creeping rhizomes, but those fronds are sterile. Fertile fronds are erect.
