Syzygium smithii ‘Allyn Magic’ (Lilly Pilly ‘Allyn Magic’; Lilly Pilly)

(Acmena smithii var. minor 'Allyn Magic')

This native cultivar is a dwarf form (0.6m) of its parent Syzygium smithii. The shrub is compact with flushes of new growth throughout the year. It was registered in 2001 and holds Plant Breeder’s Rights. The parent species is native to QLD, NSW and VIC and has been in the Australian plant trade since 1850. It has naturalised and become an environmental weed in Victoria outside its native range, where it is seen as a potential threat to one or more vegetation formations although not regarded as a significant weed yet. The parent species is also regarded as invasive in Lord Howe Island (NSW). The cultivar produces creamy flowers followed by pink edible berries. There is no evidence of the cultivar having a lower reproductive fitness compared to the parent species.
