Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum (Doublefile viburnum)

(Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum)

This perennial shrub, native to China and Japan, has been in the ornamental trade in Australia since 1850 and has not become naturalised in that time. This variety is a wild fertile species, that originated from the sterile variety V. plicatum. The species is not known to be invasive in any part of the world, but an ornamental variety called Japanese Snowball is reported as naturalised in parts of USA and Europe with similar climate to parts of NSW. Its close relative, V. tinus is an environmental weed in VIC and SA. The species reproduces seed which are dispersed by birds. There are areas in NSW with similar climate to the species native range. When in flower the shrub is coverd in large flat white flowers.
