Ulmus minor (English Elm, Field Elm)

(Ulmus procera, U. glabra)

This is a suckering deciduous tree native to central Europe where climatic conditions are similar to some parts of NSW. It has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia since 1806 and is currently reported as naturalised in SA, Vic and ACT. However, there is no evidence of it being invasive anywhere in the world. Its close relative, Ulmus pumila, invades pastures, road-sides and prairies throughout the Midwest and Great Plains regions of the United States. The species is capable of reproducing both vegetatively and sexually by wind-dispersed seed.
