Trachelospermum asiaticum (Japanese Star Jasmine)

This is a medium-sized evergreen vine native to Japan and Korea. There is no data as to how long it has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia. The species has not become naturalised in Australia and is not known to be invasive anywhere in the world. However, a member of the same genus T. jasminoides is listed as an invasive species in the Bahamas. When used as a groundcover, Trachelospermum asiaticum will form a mat of tangled stems creating a dense cover that has the potential to smother other species. The species does not produce seed and thus reproduces vegetatively. There is a small degree of similarity between its native range climate and that of parts of NSW.
