Tibouchina granulosa (Purple Glory Tree, Purple Spray Bush)

(Pleroma granulosum, Melastoma granulosum)

This sprawling, evergreen shrub or small ornamental tree is native to Bolivia and southern and south-eastern Brazil. It has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia since 1875 and has not become naturalised. The species has been reported to have become naturalised in South Africa and parts of the USA but has not become invasive in any part of the world. The species reproduces by winged seed which are mostly dispersed by wind. There are some areas in NSW with a similar climate to the native range of the species. In autumn Tibouchina granulosa produces an eye-catching display of purple flowers. Its foliage is dark green and has distinct veins.
