Taxodium distichum (Swamp Cypress, Bald Cypress)

Taxodium distichum is a deciduous coniferous tree, 30 – 50m tall, native to North America. It has been in cultivation in Australia since the early days of European Settlement. Although widely planted there is no evidence of naturalisation in Australia. The species is recorded as naturalised in many countries around the world, but is not invasive. Swamp Cypress is fast growing and long lived. The species has branches with bright green needle-like foliage that change to a copper colour in autumn before falling. Swamp Cypress will develop woody pneumatophores to 0.5m tall (Cypress knees) in moist soil roots.
