Strelitzia reginae (Bird of Paradise, Crane flower)

Strelitzia reginae is native to the southern and eastern parts of the Cape Province and northern Natal in South Africa. It has been in the ornamental trade in Australia since 1850 and has not become naturalised in that time. Strelitzia reginae is among the top 50 most popular ornamental plants in Australia. The species is not invasive in any part of the world but is reported as naturalised in Mexico, Belize, Bangladesh, Madeira Island and Juan Fernández Islands off the coast of Chile. The fruit and seeds of the species are said to be toxic to dogs, cats and horses. The species reproduces via seeds which are dispersed by birds.
