Spiraea cantoniensis (May Bush, Bridalwreath Spirea)

(Spiraea lanceolata)

This exotic shrub is native to China and has been in the Australian plant trade since 1864. It is doubtfully naturalised in QLD and VIC. One source regards it as an agricultural weed in South Africa and a prior risk assessment considers it an environmental weed for the Pacific Islands region. It is naturalised in the USA and Portugal. It grows to 1-2 metres and produces white flowers in May in its native region. It also produces fruits and the propagules can be dispersed by water. More evidence on its invasive potential is needed.
