Salvia x jamensis (Hybrid Mexican sage, James Sage)

(Salvia microphylla x S. greggii)

This naturally occurring hybrid is the result of the cross between Salvia microphylla and S. greggii. The species was first published in 1994, therefore it has been in the plant trade for less than 30 years. There is no evidence of the species becoming naturalised in that short period in Australia nor overseas, neither shown invasive behaviour. Native to northeast Mexico, the native distribution has high climatic similarity with most of Australia except for the state of Tasmania. It is the parent species of Salvia x jamensis ‘Hot Lips’ and several other cultivars of different colours. It blooms in summer and autumn and has red, rose-pink, orange, salmon or pale-yellow flowers. More information on its reproduction is needed.
