Salvia officinalis (Sage)

(Oboskon cretica )

This perennial herb or shrub is native to the Mediterranean region. It has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia since 1845 and has not been reported as having become naturalised or invasive in any part of the world. However, its close relative, S. reflexa is a noxious weed in parts of Australia. The species is noted as being a casual alien in Belgium. Although S. officinalis has culinary and medicinal values, it may be toxic if consumed in large amounts. It reproduces by seed which may remain viable for up to 5 years. There is a high degree of climate similarity between its native range and NSW.
