Salvia leucantha (Mexican Sage, Velvet Sage)

This is an annual herb or perennial subshrub depending on the climatic zones where it is grown. It is native to Mexico and Central America. In Australia, the species has been in the ornamental plant trade since 1851 where it has since become naturalised in NSW. The species has not become invasive in any part of the world but its close relative, S. reflexa, is a noxious weed in parts of Australia. The species a long flowering period and produces viable seed which may be dispersed by animals. It is a fast-growing hardy species that can also spread by suckering.
