Salvia elegans (Pineapple Sage)

( Salvia incarnata )

This is an herbaceous perennial is native to Mexico and Guatemala. It has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia since 1888 and has not been reported as having become naturalised or invasive in any part of the world. However, a member of the same genus, S. reflexa is a noxious weed in parts of Australia. Salvia elegans grows as an annual in colder areas where it dies back during colder seasons and regrows in spring. It also reproduces by seed and has a long flowering period. There is a moderate level of climate similarity between its native range and parts of NSW. Pineapple Sage is an edible herb with foliage that smells of pineapple.
