Rhododendron indicum (Azalea)

Rhododendron indicum is an evergreen shrub native to Japan. There is no data on how long the species has been in the ornamental trade in Australia. There is no evidence that Azalea has become naturalised. A member of the same genus, R. ponticum is regarded as an invasive species in parts of Ireland and UK with similar climate to parts of NSW. The species reproduces by copious amounts of small seed which are dispersed by wind. There are areas in NSW with similar climate to the species native range. Azaleas flower from late winter to spring.
