Quercus rubra (Northern Red Oak)

(Q. borealis)

This fast growing deciduous tree is Native to North America. It has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia since 1857 and has not become naturalised in that time. However, the species is regarded as invasive in many parts of central Europe where it significantly native species richness and abundance. It takes 20-25 years for the tree to reach the flowering stage and the fruits (acorns) are dispersed by small mammals including wood mice, squirrels, rats and wild boars. Although Q. rubra has not become naturalised in Australia, there is a moderately high degree of climate similarity between its native as well as invasive range and parts of NSW.
