Prunus persica (Flowering Peach)

This deciduous tree is native to China. It has been in the ornamental trade in Australia since 1817 and has become naturalised in WA, SA, NSW and QLD. The species and its congener, P. ceracifera (Cherry Plum), are regarded as environmental weeds in Australia in VIC, SA, the ACT and NSW. The variety (P.p. var. persica) is considered an environmental weed in NSW. It is not listed as prohibited in any country. The species reproduces by seed which is mainly dispersed by animals or in dumped garden waste. There are a few areas in NSW with similar climate to the species native range. Flowering Peach produces pink, white and sometimes red flowers along branches in spring. The leaves appear after the spring blossom.
