Portulacaria afra (Elephant Bush, Dwarf Jade)

(Portulacaria portulacaria)

This is a small succulent house or garden plant native to South Africa. It has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia since 1940 and has become naturalised in WA. However, there is no evidence of the species becoming invasive anywhere in the world. The species reproduces by seed as well as vegetatively. It is edible and can be used as fodder. There is a high degree of climate similarity between its native range and parts of NSW. This species is similar in appearance to Jade Plant (Crassula ovata) but has much smaller leaves and a compact growth form. It has small, fleshy green leaves and rarely flowers under cultivation.
