Plumeria rubra (Frangipani)

(Plumeria acuminata, Plumeria acutifolia)

This small deciduous tree is native to the region of Central America from Mexico to Venezuela. It has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia since 1890 and has not become naturalised. Frangipani is widely cultivated and has become naturalised in many countries, however, there is no evidence of invasiveness. The species reproduces by winged seed which are mostly dispersed by wind and by water. There are areas of Australia with a similar climate to the native range of the species. This popular tree has long, oval shaped leaves. The five-petalled flowers are fragrant and red coloured.
