Pistacia chinensis (Chinese Pistachio)

This deciduous tree is native to China and has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia since 1947. It has since become naturalised in NSW and the ACT. It is also naturalised in several states in the USA but there are no records suggesting that the species has become invasive anywhere in world. Pistacia chinensis reproduces by seed, dispersed by multiple species of birds and possibly other animals, such as squirrels. There is a moderate level of climate match between its native range and parts of NSW. Chinese Pistachio is grown for its autumn display of red leaves but is also a suitable shade tree in warmer months.
