Phoenix roebelenii (Pygmy Date Palm, Dwarf Date Palm)

The palm is a native of subtropical parts of southern China, Laos and Vietnam. It has been traded in Australia since 1895 and is only doubtfully naturalised in some parts of Australia. The species is a popular ornamental plant in Australia. There is no evidence that the species is invasive anywhere in the world. Reproduction is primarily by seed but the species may also spread by suckers. Phoenix roebelenii is prolific seeder. There is a small degree of climate similarity between parts of NSW and the species’ native range. This dwarf palm grows to 2 m and thrives in any garden position.
