Philodendron martianum (Flask Philodendron)

( Caladium crassipes)

This perennial herb is endemic to southern Brazil and has been in the ornamental trade in Australia since 1960. The species has not become naturalised or invasive in Australia or anywhere in the world. Plants reproduce vegetatively by rhizomes and also by seed. Some records suggest that P. martianum may grow on tree branches as an epiphyte. The plant is said to be poisonous to pets. The climate of its native range is similar to that of some parts of NSW. P. maratianum has a chunky stem and glossy leaves.
