Osmanthus heterophyllus (Holly Tea Olive, Fragrant Olive, False Holly)

(Olea aquifolium, Olea ilicifolia)

This dense shrub is native to Japan and Taiwan and has been in the ornamental trade in Australia since 1880. There is no evidence to suggest that the species has become naturalised in Australia. However, Osmanthus heterophyllus is regarded as an invasive species in parts of Virginia USA with similar climate to some parts of NSW. The species reproduces by seed although seed set in cultivation is rare. There is also a moderate level of climate similarity between its native range and some parts of NSW.
