Nyssa sylvatica (Black Tupelo; Sour Gum; Pepperidge)

( Nyssa canadensis, Nyssa carolinian)

This deciduous tree is native to north eastern parts of the USA. There is no evidence to show that it has become naturalised in Australia despite it being in the ornamental plant trade since 1817. Similarly, no evidence suggests that the species has become invasive in any part of the world. It reproduces by seed that are dispersed by birds and mammals. There is a moderately high degree of climate similarity between its native range and some parts of NSW. Nyssa sylvatica has glossy oval leaves that turn from deep green to red, orange and yellow in autumn.
