Magnolia kobus (Kobus Magnolia, Northern Japanese Magnolia)

( Buergeria obovata, Magnolia borealis )

This deciduous tree is native to Japan. There is no evidence the species has naturalised in Australia. However, Kobus Magnolia has naturalised in the USA and Canada, including in areas with a similar climate to parts of NSW. The species has also been recorded as invasive in the USA (in Delaware), although there is no evidence of impacts. The leaves contain allelopathic compounds, which may inhibit the growth of surrounding native vegetation. Once Kobus Magnolia has established, it is able to thrive relatively unhindered. Reproduction is via seed and vegetative means (layering). The fleshy seeds are dispersed by birds.
