Magnolia grandiflora (Bull Bay Magnolia, Southern Magnolia)

( Magnolia angustifolia, Magnolia elliptica)

This evergreen tree is native to south-eastern USA. The species M. grandiflora is incorrectly traded under Magnolia grandifolia in Australia, and has been in the ornamental plant trade since 1843. There are no records to indicate that the species has become naturalised in Australia or invasive anywhere in the world. Magnolia grandiflora is a prolific seed producer. The seeds are dispersed by birds. Seedlings are susceptible to frost. There are some areas in NSW with a similar climate to the native range of the species.
