Magnolia figo (Port Wine Magnolia, Banana shrub)

(Michelia figo)

This perennial shrub or small tree is native to China. It has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia since 1817 and has not become naturalised in that time. Magnolia figo is a popular ornamental plant in Australia and is not known to be invasive anywhere in the world. Also known as its synonym Michelia figo, this species reproduces by seed in its native range but some sources suggest that the seeds produced outside native range are non-viable.
