Magnolia acuminata (Cucumber Magnolia)

This deciduous tree is native to North America (USA and Canada). Despite being in the ornamental trade in Australia since 1850, this species has not naturalised. It may have naturalised overseas (including in Croatia and Ireland), however it is difficult to find evidence to confirm this. There is no evidence to suggest this species is invasive in areas outside its native range. Cucumber Magnolia reproduces via seed. The seeds have a fleshy outer coat, and are dispersed by birds, wind, water and gravity. A closely related species, Magnolia kobus, is considered invasive in the USA, including in areas with a similar climate to parts of NSW.
