Lycoris aurea (Golden Spider Lily, Golden Hurricane Lily)

(Lycoris africana)

This bulbous perennial herb is native to China and Japan. There is no data to show how long the species has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia. It has not been reported as naturalised in Australia or anywhere else in the world. While the species produces seeds, sources are conflicted on whether or not they are sterile. Reproduction is mainly by bulbs. There is a moderate degree of climate similarity between its native range and the western parts of NSW. Golden Spider Lily flowers in late summer and produces elegant yellow flowers with curled petals and long protruding stamens. The fleshy, strap-shaped leaves remain until the plant goes dormant.
