Loropetalum chinense (Chinese Fringe Flower)

This evergreen shrub is native to Asia including India, southern China, north-eastern Thailand, Japan and Taiwan. This species has not naturalised in Australia despite being in the ornamental trade since 1933. However, the Chinese Fringe Flower has naturalised in the United States in Alabama and Arkansas. There is no evidence to suggest this species is invasive in areas outside its native range. Reproduction is via seed. The woody capsules open to release the seeds, which are dispersed ballistically. There is a naturally occurring variety (L. c. var. rubrum) which has purple-red or red petals. The deep pink-brown leaves of Chinese Fringe Flower create a great backdrop for the vibrant, sweet scented, pink flowers in spring and summer.
