Lophophora williamsii (Peyote, Peyote Cactus)

(Lophophora lewinii)

This is a slow-growing spineless cactus native to southern Texas and Mexico whose stem is poisonous if ingested. The species is protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and as such there is no data to show how long the species has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia. It has not been reported as naturalised in Australia or anywhere else in the world. Lophophora williamsii reproduces both vegetatively and sexually. There is a relatively high degree of climate similarity between its native range and the western parts of NSW.
