Lavandula angustifolia (English Lavender)
(Lavandula officinalis, Lavandula spica)This aromatic shrub is native to the Mediterranean (Spain, France and Italy). Despite being in the ornamental trade in Australia since 1806, the species has not naturalised. English Lavender has naturalised overseas, including in the United States. There is no evidence the species is invasive outside its native range. Lavandula angustifolia subsp. angustifolia has naturalised in New Zealand. Reproduction is via wind dispersed seed. The plant is noted as toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. A closely related species, Lavandula stoechas, is invasive in Australia and a declared weed in VIC and WA. English Lavender is planted for its fragrant flowers that attract local insects, including butterflies and bees. It is an attractive cottage garden plant.
