Laurus nobilis (Bay Laurel; Bay Tree)
This evergreen tree is native to the Mediterranean. The species has been in ornamental trade since 1806 and has naturalised in both SA and VIC, although it is likely only a casual alien. However, the species has naturalised in New Zealand. Bay Tree has been recorded as invasive in South America, in Brazil and Argentina, and Switzerland, with no supporting evidence of impacts. Reproduction is via both seed and vegetative means (suckering). The fruit is an edible berry and is likely dispersed by birds. Female trees are capable of producing a few thousand fruit, but most trees in cultivation are male. The plant is toxic to dogs, cats and horses. Bay Tree oils may also cause contact allergies in humans. Bay Tree is commonly planted for its aromatic foliage, frequently used in cooking.
