Juniperus rigida var. conferta (Shore Juniper)
(Juniperus conferta)This plant is a shrubby and spreading conifer native to Japan. It has likely naturalised in NSW, in the Blue Mountains area. There is no evidence that Shore Juniper is invasive in Australia, or elsewhere outside its native range. The species native range has a similar climate to parts of NSW. Reproduction is via both seed and vegetative means (layering forms vegetative mats). The seed cones are fleshy and berry-like, and are likely to be dispersed by birds. Juniperus species are mildly toxic, and ingestion may cause minor illness, including vomiting and diarrhoea. Shore Juniper is a dense, evergreen, low-spreading shrub with aromatic needle-like foliage.
