Hyophorbe verschaffeltii (Spindle Palm)
( Mascarena verschaffeltii )This palm is native to Rodrigues Island, Mauritius, where it is critically endangered. The species has been in the ornamental trade in Australia since 1885. There is no evidence Spindle Palm has naturalised in Australia or elsewhere outside its native range except for India. Spindle Palm reproduces via seed. The fleshy fruit is likely dispersed by birds. Spindle Palm is a common addition to tropical gardens.
