Furcraea parmentieri (Century Furcraea)
( Furcraea bedinghausii)This succulent is native to Mexico. It has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia since 1904 and has not become naturalised in that time. However, the species is naturalised in New Zealand in areas with a similar climate to parts of NSW. There are parts of NSW with similar climatic conditions to the species’ native range. There is no evidence that this species has become invasive anywhere outside its native range. Furcraea parmentieri is often sold under its synonym Furcraea bedinghausii. The plant has large grey succulent leaves and is monocarpic. It produces a flower stem 4 – 5 m tall with white bell flowers before it dies. Reproduction is via bulbils and water dispersed seed. Seeding to flowering can take 5 years.
